The very first restaurant of the American fast food chain KFC in Algeria was closed barely forty-eight hours after its opening, on instructions from local authorities.

The American brand, opened on Sunday April 14, quickly sparked controversy on social networks, leading to an impromptu sit-in in front of the restaurant and calling for a boycott of the brand because of its supposed support for Israel.

Located in Algiers, more precisely in the Bois des Cars district of Delly Brahim, the restaurant covers an area of 400 m2. It welcomed its first customers on the afternoon of Sunday April 14, attracting a large crowd eager to discover the brand’s specialties, mainly focused on fried chicken, as reported by the website Latest News from Algeria.

However, from the evening of Tuesday to Wednesday, the authorities of the wilaya of Algiers ordered the removal of the sign from the top of the building, in full view of passers-by and motorists. A video of this event has already gone viral on social media.
