Police arrested a convicted felon accused of murdering a missing woman after her battered remains were recovered across state lines.

Dustin Wayne Wesley Turpin, 35, of Salem, South Carolina, has been charged with murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, according to the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office.

He was denied bond Wednesday, WLOS-TV reported, citing the sheriff.

Turpin is accused of fatally striking 28-year-old Kandace Nicole Adams in the head last month and then disposing of her body 40 miles away in Transylvania County, North Carolina, a news release stated.

Law enforcement said they began their investigation on Dec. 15 after they received a tip that Turpin allegedly killed Adams, who was missing.

“Deputies made contact with Turpin, who was in possession of a firearm.  At that time, deputies did not discover any evidence that a crime had been committed and Turpin was transported to the hospital for further evaluation,” per the release.

Authorities did not disclose a motive in the alleged slaying.

The investigation remains ongoing.
