In a project initiated by the provincial Executive Branch, the Legislature of Córdoba approved this Wednesday the construction of a commemorative monument to the legacy and figure of Sonia Torres, the historical reference of the Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo who died last October.
Legislator Leandro Carpintero spoke before the plenary session about the decision of the Government of Córdoba to build the monument in the Plazoleta de la Merced, in front of the headquarters of the local branch of Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo, in the heart of this provincial capital. Building, the latter, which was transferred in March 2022 by the Province to the civil organization that Sonia Torres presided over, in a measure that was ratified by the plenary session of the Córdoba legislature.

Carpintero explained that this busy point “It is the place where we have seen Sonia come and go so many times.” And he said that placing the monument there “will allow it to be a true mark of memory, in the epicenter of the country’s second city where thousands of people pass through every day.”
“In these times, it is very important to ratify the defense of Human Rights in Córdoba. It is a public policy, a State policy, and the values of Memory, Truth and Justice do not recognize a step backwards,” concluded the legislator from the official party.

During the enactment of the law, Camila Gómez Parodi, granddaughter of Sonia Torres, and María Teresa Sánchez, lawyer for Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo, were present at the venue. Córdoba subsidiary, as well as members of the Provincial Memory Commission and Human Rights organizations. There were also Elena Gallinari, Belén Altamiranda Taranto and Astrid Patiño, granddaughters recovered thanks to the work of Abuelas.
The initiative received the support of all blocks, except Encuentro Vecinal Córdoba, which abstained.
