Hard times for holiday flyers – not just for Swiss airlines like Edelweiss and Helvetic. At Condor, for example, the number of flights has fallen by 90 percent due to Corona. “I’ve gotten used to looking at the daily passenger numbers – it doesn’t put you in a good mood. I prefer to be happy about every plane that takes off, ”says Condor boss Ralf Teckentrup (63) in the Interview with “Bild am Sonntag” (behind paywall).
There are currently ten percent of flights compared to the previous year in the air, rather less. “Almost all of our employees are affected by short-time work.”
Fear of a corona infection abroad slows tourists down their plans for a stay far away from home. Holidays are also possible in the current Corona situation, says Teckentrup: “We’re flying to the Canary Islands and Cuba, where I was there myself: you can’t get infected there, even if you wanted to. The hygiene concepts are that good. “
Dominican Republic and Maldives
From Christmas the Dominican Republic and the Maldives would be back on the flight schedule. “The travel countries do everything for a safe vacation,” promises Teckentrup. “In summer 2020 we had almost 50 percent of normal capacity, without vaccine and rapid tests – why shouldn’t it be 70 or 80 percent in 2021 if we use these aids sensibly?”
Can’t webcam and Co. replace holidays for a while? “I invite everyone to my office, set up a screen that shows a dream beach and then we can relax for a week,” he continues in the interview. Joking aside: «No stream in the world can replace a relaxing holiday! Why were the beaches on the North and Baltic Seas so packed in summer? Because Germans want to go on vacation. “
Swiss providers are ramping up the program
It’s not just Germans who want a vacation. Swiss travel operators are also recording a slight increase in bookings for dream vacations. Kuoni, for example, promises on its website for long-haul destinations such as the Maldives: “Our island resorts guarantee that everything runs smoothly without significant restrictions on service, enjoyment and comfort.” We are talking about a “relaxed and safe holiday experience” in the paradisiacal island kingdom.
Africa vacations are also sold: In many classic safari countries, the official corona case numbers are low.
Holiday flyers are again including destinations in their program that promise safer holidays from Corona. Edelweiss will be flying from mid-December again once a week from Zurich to Havana in Cuba and San José in Costa Rica. (uro)
