Coronavirus: the Champions League could take place exclusively in August

-

When will the competitions for the moment interrupted take place? The coronavirus pandemic is forcing national and European authorities to construct several hypotheses. Last week, UEFA, which governs European football, reminded its 55 member associations of the need to end the tests on 3 August 2020. But these are only cups and national championships. In France, the finals of the Coupe de la Ligue and the Coupe de France have not yet taken place. The final of the PSG-Lyon League Cup was initially scheduled for last Saturday at the Stade de France.

According to our information, the Champions League could take place entirely in August. This is a possibility discussed last Friday, April 3, at the office of the Professional Football League. It is stipulated black on white on the minutes of the meeting that we have obtained.

“Regarding club competitions, two scenarios:

A. Restart in parallel of domestic and UCC competitions (UEFA club competitions, ie the Champions League and the Europa League) in early June and mid-June for the end of the season in late July for the championships and early August for the UCCs. Start season 20/21 (for France) from mid-August.

B. Block by block = start of domestic competitions in June and close in early August. UCC in August. Start season 20/21 (in France) mid-September. In all cases, UEFA considers that the domestic competitions must be completed by 3 August at the latest. “

“UEFA analyzes all options” to end the season

Contrary to what has been claimed by some German media, the Champions League does not have to end on August 3. In a statement this Sunday, the European body denied the information from the ZDF channel that went in this direction.

” President (Editor’s note: Aleksander Čeferin) was very clear that he did not give a specific deadline to end the season, writes the proceeding. UEFA is currently analyzing all the options for ending the seasons of the national championships and European competitions, in conjunction with the European club association and the European Leagues, as part of the working group set up on 17 March. The priority of all members of this group is to preserve public health. Then, it is a question of finding dates in order to finish all the competitions. Different options are currently being studied to play matches in July and August if necessary, depending on the date of resumption and the authorizations of the national authorities. “

For the record, while PSG has qualified for the quarter-finals of this Champions League (like Atlético Madrid, Bergamo and Leipzig), there are four fourth round finals to go (including that of Lyon against Juve) and the end of the competition (quarters, semi-finals, final).
