A good omen in the race for the European Film Prize and the foreign Oscar: Marie Kreutzer’s “Corset” was honored as “best film” at the BFI London Film Festival on Sunday. The unusual portrait of Sisi prevailed in the main competition against seven strong competitors, including the political thriller “Argentina, 1985” by Santiago Mitre, which recently premiered at the Venice Film Festival and the Canadian youth film “Brother” by Clement Virgo.
“Corset” was premiered in May at the Cannes Film Festival. In the historical drama, the Austrian empress is portrayed around her 40th birthday. The film, which is strongly supported by leading actress Vicky Krieps, shows how difficult the monarch is with aging, as she was up to then been a symbol of beauty.
The European co-production is also part of the European Film Awards 2022, which will be presented in Reykjavik on December 10th. In addition, “Corset” was nominated by Austria for the best foreign language film at the Oscars, the most prestigious film award. Whether the Austrian contribution will make it into the gala in March 2023 remains to be seen. The foreign Oscar shortlist, consisting of 15 films, will be published on December 21.
