Countries ready to assist after earthquake disasters in Turkey and Syria

The number of victims in the devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Syria on February 6 is still increasing.

According to the Turkish Emergency and Disaster Management Agency, the death toll in the country has risen to 1,014 with 2,824 buildings completely destroyed.

In Syria, media and rescue forces reported that the death toll had risen to 592.

According to the official news agency SANA, the quake killed at least 371 people and injured 1,089 in government-controlled areas including the cities of Aleppo, Hama, Latakia and Tartus.

In the northwestern part of Syria held by opposition forces, at least 221 people were killed and 419 wounded. The Syrian government has set up a rescue coordination center, while relevant ministries and agencies are on alert.

For his part, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz sent condolences to President Erdogan, and affirmed that Germany is ready to assist Turkey in dealing with this disaster.

On the morning of February 6 local time, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake shook Turkey and Syria. Rescue teams in both countries are grappling with rain and snow to find survivors in the rubble.

According to the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland, the quake’s tremors could be felt as far as Greenland. Seismologist Tine Larsen said seismometers on Bornholm island picked up seismic waves about five minutes after the quake started.

About eight minutes later, the tremor reached the east coast of Greenland, spreading across the entire area.

A magnitude 7.5 earthquake continued to shake southeastern Turkey on the afternoon of February 6. Both Denmark and Greenland felt these two earthquakes and all the aftershocks that followed.
