Coup d’etat in Burkina Faso: The Moroccan embassy in Ouagadougou reassures about the situation of members of the Moroccan community

Just eight months after Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba’s putsch, which enabled him to oust former President Roch Marc Christian Kabor from power, on January 24, 2022, the army again overthrew power on Friday evening 30 September 2022. The president of the transition, Lieutenant-Colonel Damiba, dismissed by Captain Ibrahim Traoré, initially refused to abdicate before agreeing to resign on Sunday October 2. Damiba himself proposed his resignation in order to avoid confrontations with serious human and material consequences. The former strongman of the Country of Upright Men set seven conditions for agreeing to resign, including “the guarantee of the security and non-prosecution” of the soldiers engaged at his side, “the guarantee of his security and his rights, as well as those of his collaborators” and “respect for the commitments made” with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for a return of power to civilians within two years. Captain Traoré, now president of the Patriotic Movement for Safeguarding and Restoration (MPSR), agreed to these terms.

A politically unstable situation which worries the Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco in Ouagadougou to the highest degree about the fate of Moroccans established in this West African country. The Embassy, which is closely following the situation in Burkina Faso and the events taking place there, reassures about the situation of the members of the Moroccan community residing in Burkina Faso and calls on the compatriots “to stay at their homes and to observe any alertness”. It has set up a tracking unit and makes this emergency number available if needed: +226 06 41 80 80.
