The Ministry of Health announced, on Thursday (22), through a technical note, recommendations for the use of masks as a preventive measure against Covid-19. The new guidelines provided by the folder aim to ensure that specific groups keep security instruments in specific situations.

After making the use of equipment more flexible in health units, communicated in April by the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa), the Ministry of Health presents new guidelines that determine the cases where the use of the mask is recommended.

According to the technical note, the groups recommended to use the protection are:

People with flu-like symptoms, suspected or confirmed cases of Covid-19; People who have had recent close contact with suspected or confirmed cases of Covid-19; People with risk factors for complications from Covid-19 (especially immunosuppressed people, the elderly, pregnant women and people with multiple comorbidities) in situations with a higher risk of contamination, such as closed and poorly ventilated places, crowded places and in health services.

Despite the end of the determination of the health emergency of the coronavirus pandemic, the Ministry of Health reiterates that the prevention and control measures to reduce the transmission of the coronavirus remain important, especially for individuals who are at greater risk of developing a serious condition of Covid -19.

In addition, the importance of vaccination to prevent cases of hospitalization due to the disease is highlighted. The Ministry of Health warns of the need for efforts and intensification of strategies to achieve goal of 90% vaccination coverage in the target population in Brazil. Immunization is available for the entire population over 6 months.

On a related note, preliminary data showed positive results for the effectiveness of SpiN-Tec, a Brazilian vaccine developed by the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) and the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz). The second phase of clinical trials with the vaccine should begin in the second half of 2023.
