The prefecture and the ARS announce, this Tuesday, May 10, six deaths and 7,865 new cases in Reunion, from April 30 to May 6. The incidence rate falls below the threshold of 1,000 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The decrease in viral circulation is confirmed.

The decrease in viral circulation is confirmed in Reunion. Over the past seven days, the authorities have announced the deaths of six patients and 7,865 new cases of Covid-19 in Reunion (compared to 10,931 last week).

From April 30 to May 6, the incidence rate fell below 1,000 cases and stood at 919 cases per 100,000 inhabitants against 1,277 last week, a drop of 28%. The positivity rate is also down to 33.3% (from 36.4% previously).

According to the authorities, “vigilance and respect for barrier gestures remain essential, however, because the virus continues to generate hospitalizations and deaths”.

Thus, as of May 10, nine intensive care beds were occupied by Covid patients and 51 by patients with other pathologies (i.e. 81.1% occupancy rate).

The prefecture and the Regional Health Agency announce six deaths, which have occurred in the last seven days.

– 2 people aged 45 to 54,
– 3 people aged 55 to 64,
– 1 person aged over 75.

Four people were not vaccinated or had an incomplete vaccination schedule. Both vaccinated people had comorbidities.

The positivity rate is at 33.3% for the week of April 30 to May 6, down from last week.

The weekly incidence rate fell sharply, falling below 1,000 to settle at 919/100,000 inhabitants (compared to 1,277 the previous week).

In total, 7,865 cases were confirmed from April 30 to May 6. Given the 395,430 recoveries and 762 deaths since the start of the health crisis, 9,788 cases are still active to date. Since the start of the epidemic, 405,980 cases have been investigated to date by the ARS, Public Health France and Health Insurance.

From April 29 to May 6, 4,084 positive cases were screened to identify a mutation: 3,958 cases presented one of the specific mutations under surveillance, in this case the Omicron variant, i.e. 97%.

The authorities confirm the presence of the BA.4 and BA.5 sublineage of the Omicron variant in La Réunion by sequencing. Two cases of the BA.4 sublineage were sequenced in two people returning from South Africa at the end of April. A BA.5 sublineage case was sequenced in a person returning from Mauritius at the end of April.

“Since the beginning of April, reinforced surveillance has been initiated in conjunction with Santé Publique France on the BA.4 and BA.5 sub-lines, ensures the prefecture of Reunion. The observations made in South Africa cannot necessarily be transposed to France and Reunion, given the different vaccination coverage and different circulation histories (BA.2 circulated widely in Reunion but little circulated in South Africa )”.

“At this stage, no clinical element of concern is associated with these sub-lineages in view of their predominant circulation in South Africa”, she continues.

As of May 10, 2022, 9 intensive care beds were occupied by patients positive for Covid-19, out of the 74 beds installed in Reunion, and 51 by patients with other pathologies (81.1% occupancy rate ).
