For three consecutive weeks, the number of people positive for Covid-19 has increased in Reunion, with also an increase in emergency room visits and hospitalizations. This is why the Regional Health Agency recommends that people most at risk of a serious form of the disease be vaccinated again.

An increase in the circulation of Covid-19 has been observed for several weeks in Reunion.

The positivity rate increased from 9% to 26% from week 43 (October 23 – 29) to week 46 (November 12 – 19). This increase concerns all age groups.

The number of hospitalizations for Covid is increasing: 14 in week 46 compared to 2 in week 44 (October 30 – November 5).

The number of visits to the emergency room is also increasing: 29 visits in week 46 compared to 5 in week 44.

The majority variant which has been circulating for several months in Reunion is a sub-variant of Omicron.

– Vaccination strongly recommended for vulnerable people –

Vaccination strengthens protection by stimulating the immune system and thus limits the risks of severe forms of Covid-19 which can lead to hospitalization or death. But the protection conferred by vaccination declines over time.

Health authorities recommend that the following people get vaccinated again:

• people aged 65 and over

• residents of EHPADs and long-term care units (USLD), regardless of their age

• people with one or more frailty factors (comorbidities): obesity (BMI >30), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), respiratory failure, type 1 and 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart failure, renal failure, etc. .

• immunocompromised people, regardless of their age

• pregnant women

• people living nearby or in regular contact with these people

immunocompromised or vulnerable, including professionals in the health and medical sectors
social.

Vaccination against Covid-19 remains possible for anyone who wishes.

The time period to be respected between two doses of vaccine or between a Covid-19 infection and a dose of vaccine is 6 months. For immunocompromised people, this period is reduced to 3 months after the last injection or infection.

– Where and how to get vaccinated? –

• For residents in EHPAD and USLD, vaccination is organized by the establishment

• Other data subjects can:

– make an appointment with their doctor, pharmacist, nurse (if they offer vaccination)
– go to the site www.sante.fr to find a healthcare professional nearby.

Vaccination will be done with the Pfizer vaccine which protects against the majority variants currently circulating (XBB1.5) and the different variants.

For people who cannot benefit from it (contraindications), it is possible to use the Novavax vaccine.

In this context of circulation of the virus, barrier gestures must be applied:

– wear a mask when you are sick or a contact person, in the presence of vulnerable people or in closed places with high traffic,
– Wash your hands regularly or use a hydroalcoholic gel,
– Ventilate the rooms frequently, if possible 10 minutes every hour.

In case of symptoms, get tested.
