Cowboys shorten Brett Maher’s leash after disastrous postseason performance.

The Dallas Cowboys have set up insurance for kicker Brett Maher, who struggled in the Wild Card Round game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Dallas Cowboys silenced their critics for at least one more week after beating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31-14 in their Wild Card Round game. The offense clicked and the defense made Tom Brady’s job much more difficult. But one player had a tough night in Tampa, kicker Brett Maher. The veteran kicker missed his first four extra-point attempts of the game, but luckily for the Cowboys, those misses didn’t affect the final score.

Although the Cowboys insisted that Maher’s job was not in jeopardy for the Divisional Round, the team took out an insurance measure just in case.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the team signed kicker Tristan Vizcaino to their practice squad.

The Cowboys sign the kicker to the practice squad after Brett Maher’s poor performance in the playoffs.

After the game, Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy said they would “move forward” with Maher as their kicker. Then, team owner Jerry Jones said they had no plans to replace Maher after his performance against the Buccaneers, or even look for kickers. Well, they looked at Vizcaino, and signed him to the practice squad. So yeah.

Vizcaino was an undrafted free agent from Washington in 2018. He played his first career NFL game with the San Francisco 49ers in 2020, where he made all three field goal attempts, including a 47-yard long, and his two extra point attempts. Last year, Vizcaino appeared in six games for the Los Angeles Chargers, making six of seven field goal attempts (46 yards long) and 10 of 15 extra point attempts.

Prior to joining the Cowboys’ practice squad this season, Vizcaino appeared in two games for the Arizona Cardinals, where he twice attempted to score field goals (46-yard length) and three times to score extra points.

Maher made history last Monday, becoming the first player to miss four extra-point attempts in a match since 1932.

The Cowboys can’t afford to miss a single shot as they face a 49ers team that boasts an explosive offense and dominant defense. It could be the toughest test of the season for Dallas, and the team has brought in an extra kicker as insurance in case Maher struggles.
