For peeing wildly, bathing in the fountain, staying overnight in parks or drinking alcohol outside of bars in the old town, even 300 euros will be due in future. The city wants to implement these measures with the help of additional staff in the high season. The rules of conduct became necessary after numerous headlines in the previous year, according to which tourists peed in fountains or were drunk on the street. Films of fountain bathers and even a couple having sex on a sidewalk in broad daylight also surfaced.
Split is a popular place for party-goers with its nightclubs, and the Ultra Festival in July draws tens of thousands of electronic music fans to the city. With the accession to the Schengen area and the introduction of the euro on 2023, a further boost for tourism is expected.
However, it is not the first holiday destination to tighten the screw when it comes to the manners of its visitors: Also in Spain and Italy introduced new rules. The «Trauminsel» Bali has also declared war on misbehaving tourists.
