In the Central African Republic, around twenty political parties and civil society organizations created a “Republican Bloc” on Friday July 22 in Bangui. Main objective of this platform: to challenge the draft reform of the Constitution of 2016.

The revision of the Constitution would result in breaking the lock on the number of presidential terms, which would allow President Faustin-Archange Touadera to run for a third. This is why some twenty parties and civil society organizations launched a “Republican Bloc” on Friday, intended to fight the desire for constitutional reform.

Joined by RFI, the former Prime Minister, Martin Ziguélé, is part of this Republican Bloc. He explains the process to us. ” We will work within the framework of the Constitution, we will mobilize the population, we will use all the instruments that the Constitution and the laws put at our disposal to mobilize the population and oppose this truth. and ensure that this fight is not limited only to political forces but also to social forces. Hence the presence of taxi, bus and other civil society organizations “, he underlines.

« The people who took part in the Bangui Forum must express themselves and say that they did not ask for any change or modification of the Constitution because these are not urgent matters of the day in a country like ours, which is bent under the yoke of armed groups, he insists. There are huge security challenges in the country, not to mention economic problems, a recessionary situation that we are in economically. And it seems to us that it is to this challenge that a responsible government should address itself and not seek to manipulate the Constitution in order to remain ad vitam æternam in power. »
