Crimson Desert DLC And October Release Date Revealed

Pearl Abyss announced that its hit action RPG Crimson Desert will receive its first major expansion, titled Charting the Unknown, on October 15, 2026. Developer earnings reports also confirmed the game has reached a playable baseline on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, targeting a release in the first half of 2027.

Charting the Unknown DLC Arrives on October 15

Following a massive sales milestone of six million copies sold since its launch, developer Pearl Abyss is pushing forward with substantial post-launch support. Crimson Desert is one of the biggest surprise hits of 2026, with 6 million copies sold by last count despite being a brand new IP that frankly, didn’t review all that well at launch. But it has received patch after patch adding to and fixing the game, all leading up to sizable DLC that will be here before winter even hits. Crimson Desert: Charting the Unknown DLC was just announced at the PlayStation State of Play in a new trailer. It’s very close, as it will be released in just over a month on October 15. It looks rather enormous, which is to be expected given just how fast developer Pearl Abyss has been able to put out huge updates, and they rapidly added large expansions to their MMO, Black Desert Online, before this. So, a huge DLC the same year the game released is impressive, but perhaps not unexpected.

The story appears to be going beyond the Crimson Desert into uncharted lands. That should be at the very top of the map, which we’ve only brushed up against. There’s a city up there with essentially nothing to do, so I imagine that will serve as a gateway to the new zone. There are a lot of story cutscenes shown, including Kliff and even Damiane being involved. Crimson Desert recently patched literal story fixes into the game, including new cutscenes and dialogue, and it seems they could have learned their lesson about a lackluster narrative for this DLC.

A big focus appears to be on underwater gameplay, which is a bit of a surprise. We see Kliff swimming in a diving suit, holding onto a propulsion device, and even swimming while grabbing a shark fin. There are some large metal underwater mechs that will have to be battled with some sort of underwater combat system, it would seem. There are going to be expansions to building abilities not just for houses and what appears to be camps, but it looks like you can build an actual castle, which is way past where the system currently is.

Quarterly Financials and Release Timelines

Ahead of the trailer reveal, Pearl Abyss outlined its production pipeline in an earnings report. Crimson Desert remains one of the biggest success stories of 2026 so far, a new IP putting up huge sales and high user scores in the hard-to-crack fantasy genre. In a press release, Pearl Abyss recaps that Crimson Desert has had 17 major updates since its release on March 19. It also notes correctly that it has finished things like months-long roadmaps in a matter of weeks, the development team one of the speediest in the business.

The company confirmed it was targeting a release within this year for the first major drop, noting that further details regarding pricing and exact schedules would arrive during the third quarter. Pearl Abyss’ second-quarter 2026 earnings letter makes several references to DLC as a major part of the company’s plans to continue growing Crimson Desert. The developer revealed in its latest quarterly financial report that it is currently working on the first major expansion of the game. Pearl Abyss has not announced a specific release date yet in the report itself, but the expansion is targeting a launch in 2026. Subsequent expansions will depend heavily on player feedback, sales trends, development resources, and company-wide pipelines.

Platform expansion remains a core priority for the studio. The earnings letter gives fresh insight into this, saying that the game has reached a playable baseline on the Switch 2. The company is currently conducting technical reviews to optimize performance and quality, targeting a release for the Switch 2 version of Crimson Desert in the first half of 2027. Meanwhile, the letter makes it clear that there are no plans to release the game on mobile devices, as any port to these platforms would not retain the game’s graphical quality.

Evaluating Multiplayer Integration for the IP

Beyond single-player expansions, Pearl Abyss is examining long-term community engagement through potential multiplayer systems. Pearl Abyss notes that adding multiplayer is driven by fan demand.

Given Crimson Desert's dynamic action combat and expansive open-world structure, there is significant potential for expansion into multiplayer modes, Pearl Abyss remarked. “However, integrating multiplayer functionality is far more complex than simply adding a new game mode; it represents a major technical initiative that requires comprehensive evaluation of server architecture, game balance, cross-platform stability, and live service operation models.”

The studio added that they are currently conducting extensive research from both technical and gameplay perspectives. Our overarching goal is to extend how users engage with the intellectual property over the long term.
