Crisis in Gaza: Impact on Hospitals and Healthcare Services

Palestinian Islamist groups have a command center beneath Al Shifa hospital, the largest in the Gaza Strip enclave, the White House highlighted on Tuesday, thus supporting Israel’s justification for focusing its military actions on these facilities.

Hamas and Islamic Jihad “operate a command and control core from Al Shifa in Gaza City,” said John Kirby, spokesman for the White House National Security Council.

The United States spoke out just as pressure mounts on Israel over the military siege around Al Shifa, where doctors say hospitalized patients and civilians trying to take refuge are trapped in terrible conditions.

The UN Office for Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) estimates that there are at least 2,300 people trapped in the fighting in that hospital.

Although Israel maintains that the hospital is not its central objective, it is nevertheless at the center of the actions of the Israeli forces and its tanks were a few meters from the entrance to this place.

According to Israel, this medical center is strategic for the Hamas command, something that movement denies.

This Tuesday, local doctors reported that they had to bury dozens of dead people in a mass grave.

Israel promised to destroy Hamas in response to the October 7 attack that left some 1,200 people dead, most of them civilians, in addition to taking 240 hostages to Gaza.

For its part, the Ministry of Health of Gaza, a territory governed by Hamas, specified that Israel’s offensive response in its territory currently leaves some 11,320 dead, mostly civilians, including 4,650 children.

UN assures that hospitals in the northern Gaza Strip stopped providing services

Medical care has been one of the most affected due to the situation that began with the attacks by the terrorist group Hamas on Israel, more than a month ago.

As a result, a negative report was recently released regarding the hospitals in the north of the Gaza Strip, part of the territory where there is the greatest amount of health infrastructure, since practically all medical care units stopped functioning, except Al Ahli hospital, where hundreds of people remain.

According to the aforementioned coordination, hospitals in northern Gaza were out of service due to lack of electricity, medical supplies, food, water, oxygen, among other factors, “in addition to the bombings and clashes in the surrounding area.”

Among the hospitals that have been most affected is the Al Shifa infrastructure, located in the center of the clashes, where the UN itself commented that in subsequent days more than 30 patients and premature babies died, since the conditions of provision of the healthcare service health are practically non-existent.

Meanwhile, the international media pointed out that the Israeli Army ordered the evacuation of the medical centers in northern Gaza, something that for the World Health Organization (WHO) is not viable due to the fact that there is a total collapse of the hospitals. Even those in the south do not have the capacity to care for others.
