Heating and hot water supply was cut off to 38,059 households in 80 locations, including the Shinjeong-Gyeongnam Honorsville Apartment in Yangcheon-gu and Guro-gu, Seoul.

According to the Seoul Energy Corporation on the 17th, it is presumed that the cause was damage to a valve in the Sinjeong pressurization plant in Sinjeong-dong, Yangcheon-gu, Seoul. It is said that while performing maintenance on the pump in the Sinjeong pressurization plant, the lower part of the valve was damaged and medium-temperature water spewed out.

A pressurization station is a part of a water supply facility that increases water pressure and supplies tap water to highlands. The supply of hot water and heating stopped due to a damaged valve.

The corporation recognized the situation at 3:54 p.m. and activated the second stage of the Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters at 3:55 p.m.

At 4:30 p.m., excavation of the surrounding area began and repair work began. At 6:50 p.m., water and steam accumulated in the Sinjeong pressurization plant began to be discharged. Yangcheon Fire Department is said to have arrived at the scene at 7:38 p.m. Starting at 8:07 p.m., heating supplies such as electric blankets are being provided to six buildings in Yangcheon-gu.

The corporation said it is carrying out restoration work, including installing temporary bypass pipes, to minimize disruption of heat supply, but the repair completion time has not been determined.

An official from Yangcheon-gu Office said, “Each community center is preparing a resting space for residents who need heating, such as the elderly.”

Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon, who visited the site that day, said, “We will do our best to speed up recovery and minimize damage to residents.”
