ITalia’s soccer series champion Juventus Turin surprisingly missed the final tournament of the Champions League. The team of two-time goalscorer Cristiano Ronaldo won the second leg of the last 16 against Olympique Lyon on Friday evening 2-1 (1-1), but the away goal made the guests cheer in the end. Because in the first leg, the French had prevailed 1-0 before the Corona break on February 26th.
This means that Lyon will meet Manchester City in the quarter-finals next week in the eighth tournament in Lisbon, which defeated Real Madrid 2-1 (1: 1) in the parallel game (first leg 2: 1).
Memphis Depay gave Lyon the lead in the 12th minute with a foul penalty – and was unlucky when the Italians equalized shortly before the break when he got the ball in the wall while he was standing. Superstar Ronaldo equalized with a hand penalty (43.).
Video evidence was used in both decisions by the German Fifa referee Felix Zwayer, and the whistles on the pitch caused a lot of emotions. Turin’s Rodrigo Betancur’s duel with Houssem Aouar initially seemed to be a rule-compliant action, but Zwayer decided on a penalty – he probably punished a slight contact between Federico Bernardeschi and Aouar. Zwayer later punished the alleged handball Depays in the penalty area, the Dutchman’s arm was laid on.
With a 20-meter hammer (60th), superstar Ronaldo then revived the hopes of Turin again – but the redeeming third goal for coach Maurizio Sarri’s team did not fall, even if Ronaldo had several good opportunities, including one shortly before the end Free kick from a promising position.
In the previous season of the premier class, Juve failed in the quarter-finals at Ajax Amsterdam. The defensive French of coach Rudi Garcia are facing the next test in the quarter-finals of the premier class.
