“Critical Fire Risk Alert: Millions at Risk in Central New Mexico and Colorado”

2023-05-10 08:02:00

(CNN) — A critical fire risk, level 2 of 3, is in effect throughout central New Mexico and south-central Colorado, according to the Storm Prediction Center. In total there are more than 1 million people at critical risk from fire, including the New Mexico cities of Albuquerque, Las Cruces and Santa Fe.

Red flag alerts include the fire hotspot and also extend into southeastern Arizona. The total population under red alert is more than 2 million people.

Widespread 40 km/h to 56 km/h winds, dry air and dry conditions might cause the fires to burn out of control quickly.

Conditions in this area will improve in the coming days and the Climate Prediction Center (CPC) forecasts a high probability of precipitation next week.
