[Critique] “Master Mozart”, Marie-Ève Munger

This CD wisely reminds us of the voice and talent of Marie-Ève Munger. The coloratura soprano is continuing her career in Europe and sang last season, notably in Strasbourg (la Reine de la nuit in The Magic Flute and in the production of Birds de Braunfels), Lille and Lausanne. Here she devotes a program to the young Mozart, with compositions ranging from The Duty of the First CommandmentK. 35 (11 years) to Pike Chair, K. 137 (16 years). The tone of the vocalizations of “ Part, I hurry », excerpt from the latter, demonstrates the vocal form of Marie-Ève Munger. This period of youth is dominated by the airs of Aspasia taken from Mithridates. These obviously provide a perfect point of comparison, since the entirety of this gem of a 14-year-old Mozart has just been recorded by Marc Minkowski and Les Musiciens du Louvre, with Sabine Devieilhe enAspasia. We then understand the limits of the emaciated orchestral sound and the somewhat placid dramatism of what is, here, an honorable sound calling card more than a discographic milestone.
