Corn and soybean harvests beginning, while the spring wheat harvest is nearly complete

FARGO, N.D. — For the week ending September 24, 2023, there were 4.3 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 11% very short, 27% short, 57% adequate, and 5% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 14% very short, 35% short, 48% adequate, and 3% surplus.

Field Crops Report: Soybean condition rated 4% very poor, 16% poor, 38% fair, 39% good, and 3% excellent. Soybeans dropping leaves was 85%, ahead of 70% last year, and near 81% for the five-year average. Harvested was 10%, ahead of 5% last year, but near 14% average.

Spring wheat harvested was 95%, near 93% last year, and equal to average.

Durum wheat harvested was 86%, near 83% last year and 90% average.

Winter wheat planted was 36%, well behind 57% last year, and behind 54% average. Emerged was 12%, equal to both last year and average.

Corn condition rated 2% very poor, 9% poor, 28% fair, 54% good, and 7% excellent. Corn dented was 95%, ahead of 86% last year and 85% average. Mature was 51%, ahead of 35% last year and 44% average. Harvested was 3%, equal to average.

Canola harvested was 76%, near 75% last year, but behind 81% average.

Sugarbeet condition rated 2% very poor, 5% poor, 30% fair, 57% good, and 6% excellent. Sugarbeets harvested was 15%, near 13% last year and 14% average.

Sunflower condition rated 1% very poor, 8% poor, 30% fair, 53% good, and 8% excellent. Sunflowers ray flowers dry was 93%, near 92% last year and 94% average. Bracts turned yellow was 78%, near 75% last year and 81% average. Bracts turned brown was 41%, ahead of 34% last year, but near 45% average.

Flaxseed harvested was 67%, behind 83% both last year and average.

Potato condition rated 3% very poor, 11% poor, 37% fair, 46% good, and 3% excellent. Potatoes vines dry was 97%, well ahead of 77% last year, and ahead of 88% average. Harvested was 59%, ahead of 46% last year and 41% average.

Dry edible bean condition rated 4% very poor, 18% poor, 39% fair, 35% good, and 4% excellent. Dry edible beans dropping leaves was 99%, ahead of 94% last year, and near 97% average. Harvested was 61%, ahead of 46% last year, and near 60% average.

Pasture and Range Report: Pasture and range conditions rated 5% very poor, 14% poor, 34% fair, 40% good, and 7% excellent.

Stock water supplies rated 5% very short, 14% short, 77% adequate, and 4% surplus.
