Schweiz: Peak Walk by Tissot

Did you know that the only suspension bridge in the world connecting two mountain peaks is in Switzerland? The 107 meter long bridge stands on the Glacier 3000 in Gstaad in the Bernese Oberland and stretches from the lower summit (View Point) to the main summit (Scex Rouge), which is five meters higher. From there you have a magnificent view of the Matterhorn, Mont Blanc, Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.

Info: A single ticket to Glacier 3000 costs CHF 85 per adult. Children and adults with the GA or Half-Fare travelcard pay CHF 43. The suspension bridge is accessible free of charge and open all year round, depending on the weather conditions.

The stretches out around 50 kilometers from Porto Suspension bridge 516 Arouca up to 175 meters above a gorge and the wild river Paiva, which later flows into a waterfall. To cross the bridge, you have to reserve a slot in advance – a guide will lead you across the bridge and tell you interesting facts about the construction of the bridge and the surrounding landscape.

Info: For the suspension bridge, which is open all year round, you have to buy a ticket online in advance – this is not possible on site. Adults pay CHF 11.50, children CHF 9.50.

Austria: Panorama Bridge Zillertal

The special thing about this suspension bridge in the Zillertal: the instagrammable view of the turquoise Schlegeisspeichersee and the Zillertal Alps. Although the suspension bridge is only 20 meters long and runs five meters above the Riepenbach, it is a popular photo subject. Whether on a day trip or an alpine, multi-day hut hike on the Berliner Höhenweg – it’s worth getting up early to avoid the photo rush on the bridge.

Info: Access to the bridge is closed during the winter months.

Ireland: Carrick-a-Rede Suspension Bridge

For over 250 years, the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge Carrick Island with mainland County Antrim. Fortunately, the bridge is more stable today than it used to be, when just a handful of wooden boards with gaps in between and a handrail made the transition.

The 20 meter long suspension bridge swings 30 meters above the sea. Sometimes more, sometimes less – depending on the wind and weather conditions. Previously used by fishermen to fish for salmon on the island, the bridge is now a popular tourist attraction. Those who make it to the other side will be rewarded with beautiful views of Rathlin Island and even Scotland.

Info: Access to the bridge is open between March and November. A ticket costs around CHF 15 per adult.
