MEXICO CITY (AP) — For the first time in his career, Ricardo Ferretti has been fired from his position. After the poor results in Liga MX as well as the Leagues Cup, Cruz Azul announced on Monday that the Brazilian coach will not continue to lead the team for the remainder of the Mexican Apertura tournament.

Ferretti, the most successful manager in local football history with seven league titles, had not been fired by any club since he began managing in 1991.

“In accordance with the results obtained in recent weeks, the decision has been made to end the relationship with coach Ricardo Ferretti,” the club said in a statement. “We know that his great career and teachings will leave their mark on future generations.”

Ferretti, 69, took the team in the middle of the previous tournament in relief for Raúl Gutiérrez and managed to advance to the playoffs, but not to the league.

In the current Clausura, the team is at the bottom of the table with no points, while in the Leagues Cup they only managed to draw two games, one they won on penalties against Atlanta and the other they lost in the same way with Charlotte FC.

The team said that, for the moment, Joaquín Moreno will take charge of the team. Moreno was Ferretti’s assistant, but he has worked at the club for several years in the lower forces.

Cruz Azul is one of the four most important teams in Mexico, but it has only been able to win one title since Winter 97 until now.

For Ferretti, the dismissal represents a second consecutive failure because before arriving at the Machine he managed Ciudad Juárez with little success.

Ferretti had his best coaching spell with Tigres, where they won five league titles in the past decade. In addition, the coach has been a champion with Chivas and Pumas. Only Ignacio Trelles has the same amount.

Due to the Leagues Cup tournament, the Clausura tournament is on hiatus and it is planned to resume at the end of the month.
