Crypto Token Buybacks Hit $638M, but Impact on Prices Varies

Digital asset projects have poured 6억3800만 달러 into token buybacks this year, marking a 17% increase from the 5억4500만 달러 recorded during the same period last year. However, according to data compiled by Allium Labs and cited by the Financial Times, this aggressive supply-reduction mechanism has failed to guarantee positive price action, with market results diverging wildly across different protocols.

The Mechanics of Token Supply Reduction

Corporate buybacks in traditional equity markets aim to reduce circulating stock and boost earnings per share. In the decentralized finance ecosystem, protocols utilize token buybacks to align protocol revenue directly with token value. By purchasing their own native tokens off the open market, projects attempt to engineer artificial scarcity.

The scale of these operations has expanded dramatically since 2024, when annual buyback figures sat at a modest 36만6000달러. Yet, writing code to execute programmatic token repurchases does not insulate a project from broader macroeconomic realities or shifting liquidity cycles.

Capital concentration defines the current landscape. Hyperliquid and pump.fun account for roughly 90% of the entire 6억3800만 달러 aggregate spend. Hyperliquid alone deployed approximately 3억7000만 달러, driven by a structural model that funnels 99% of its perpetual futures exchange fee revenue directly into buying HYPE. Since launching in December 2024, Hyperliquid’s cumulative buy-and-burn mechanism has accounted for 13억 달러 worth of HYPE. Over the past year, HYPE prices climbed 70%.

Pump.fun contributed another 2억 달러 to the buyback tally. But concentration at the top hides a much harsher reality for the rest of the market.

When Buybacks Fail to Move the Market

Supply contraction is merely one variable in tokenomics. Jupiter deployed roughly 1400만 달러 toward buybacks this year, yet its token price dropped 55% over the past 12 months. Chainlink executed buybacks as well, only to see its valuation halve over the exact same timeframe.

Other projects experienced muted responses. Sky Protocol bought back 2600만 달러 worth of SKY, resulting in a modest 5% price gain over the year. Lido announced a systematic buyback schedule in August, contingent on hitting an annualized revenue milestone of 4000만 달러.

Thorchain structures its economics by distributing 55% of revenues to token stakers while allocating an additional 20% to buybacks. Despite this explicit return mechanism, Thorchain’s token price fell by roughly 50% over the last year. Protocol design must account for where the purchasing capital originates, whether the acquired tokens undergo permanent burning or redistribution, and how developer unlocks affect float.

Programmatic Execution and Market Timing Risks

Market analysts have repeatedly warned about the pitfalls of rigid treasury management. Keyrock previously pointed out that programmatic buyback algorithms frequently over-execute when markets hit cyclical highs and under-execute during drawdowns, destroying capital efficiency.

Consider the case of Astar, which channels 99% of its daily platform fees into buying and burning its native token. Despite this aggressive, real-time supply sink, the token price stagnated around the $0.60 range at check time.

For investors navigating this sector, the data offers a clear engineering lesson. A buyback program is only as robust as the underlying protocol fee generation, treasury health, and holder rights supporting it. Relying on raw buyback metrics without auditing the underlying code and token unlock schedules remains a critical vulnerability.
