Australia faces an accelerating ecological emergency as highly pathogenic H5N1 bird flu drives seabird mortalities across multiple states. According to The Conversation, 53 confirmed detections in wild seabirds have sparked warnings of devastating impacts on native ecosystems and commercial poultry sectors.
The Shift from Isolated Migratory Cases to Local Wildlife Transmission
Until recently, Australia’s encounters with the H5N1 strain remained largely confined to isolated migratory seabirds arriving from the Southern Ocean. Current figures show 53 confirmed detections across five states, with South Australia bearing the brunt through 39 confirmed cases.
Local transmission among wildlife that live in Australia is now active. Aerial surveillance teams near Cape Jaffa recently uncovered 49 dead and 35 sick greater crested terns at an offshore location. If laboratory tests confirm these samples, it marks Australia’s first mass mortality of animals associated with the virus.

While it is not possible to reliably predict the spread of H5N1 in Australia due to carriage among migratory wildlife, the geographical spread is widening.
