Cuba and Türkiye sign agreements in the energy area 2024-03-16 04:39:21

Cuba and Türkiye signed several bilateral agreements and emphasized the energy area.

The representatives of both governments, the Cuban Deputy Prime Minister, Ricardo Cabrisas, and the Turkish Minister of Commerce, Ömer Bolat, were in charge of drawing up the so-called “road map.”

This is a bilateral economic-trade cooperation that will extend until 2026.

Minister Bolat stated that the agreement includes a 41-point action plan. It includes areas such as trade, investments, legal infrastructure, industry, technical cooperation, finance, transportation, energy, agriculture, health and medicine, culture, tourism and education.

Bolat commented that “we clearly see the growing interest of our businessmen in the Cuban market.

Especially after our commercial volume increased approximately 60% last year, reaching $81 million.”

Turkish floating power plants

As is known, the energy area has been a key point for the Cuban side in recent years. The Island has rented up to seven floating power plants to the Turkish companies Karpowership and Karadeniz Holding.

The already famous Turkish swamps located in different ports of the country have represented a palliative to the crisis caused by the lack of generation capacity.

There are several causes of the phenomenon: the lack of fuel and the obsolescence of the thermoelectric plants that still provide the National System (SEN).

The meeting between both parties occurs just when Cuba suffers a new wave of blackouts for various reasons already mentioned. By the way, the energy deficit has been between 20% and 45% of maximum demand since the end of January.

The above translates into blackouts of up to 18 hours in some areas of the country. The Electrical Union (UNE) reported that breakdowns and maintenance persist in several important power plants on the island. In this case, the Nuevitas, Matanzas and Felton plants are located.
