Cuban authorities hope that Russians will be able to pay for purchases and services with cards of the Russian payment system Mir as early as 2023, said Ambassador of the Latin American country to the Russian Federation Julio Garmendia Peña. According to him, they have been working on the implementation of the system for a year already.
“We understand that this is very convenient for tourists from Russia who come to Cuba. <...> The process was delayed a little due to technical issues. We hope that this year we will definitely introduce it,” the Ambassador said. “RIA Novosti”.
Julio Garmendia Peña recalled that ATMs in Cuba have already started accepting Mir cards for cash withdrawals. But, in his opinion, it is necessary for the system to work “in full”.
ATMs began accepting Mir cards in Cuba in mid-March. The approximate exchange rate of the local currency for the ruble is 1×1.5, excluding transaction fees.
The Mir payment system currently operates in some partner banks in Abkhazia, Armenia, Belarus, Vietnam, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, South Korea and South Ossetia. More than 15 countries have expressed readiness to implement it.
