A 53-year-old Cuban migrant set up her own business right in front of the Mexican Commission for Aid to Refugees (COMAR). The entrepreneur began her new work in the state of Chiapas as soon as she arrived on Aztec soil on her way to the United States.

He is still waiting for the response from the immigration authorities regarding the request for political asylum. The protagonist of this story, Tania Anaya, arrived in Tapachula four months ago, after her journey through Central America.

Now, the Cuban woman has a business in front of COMAR identical to the one she managed in Cuba. “He sells bread with chicken and Cuban coffee to other migrants who come to carry out their procedures outside the institution,” announced the Chiapas Comunica site in Facebook.

“The woman has not stood by, she has taken the initiative,” said the media outlet. He also specified that Tania is in the process of her process before COMAR to request refugee status in Mexico.

More than half a million Cubans arrived in the United States

During the two most recent years, a total of 533 thousand Cuban migrants arrived in the United States. This figure is equivalent to 4.8% of the 11.1 million inhabitants of the Island. This does not include entries with other types of visa, for which there is no official data available.

Meanwhile, the Customs and Border Protection Office (CBP) revealed that in 2023 more than 153 thousand Cubans entered US territory irregularly. Added to this are another 67 thousand who flew directly thanks to the Humanitarian Parole, and more than 313 thousand who entered without papers in 2022.

At the beginning of this month, the journey through Mexican territory of the “Exodus of Poverty” caravan, in which hundreds of Cuban migrants are traveling, once again transcended. At the time, seven thousand people left with the aim of reaching the southern border of the United States.
