Nippon Cultural Broadcasting Corporation will be hosting Yuichiro Ueno (Rikkyo University Athletics Club Men’s Ekiden Coach) to provide commentary for the 35th Izumo Ekiden, the beginning of the three major student ekiden events, on Monday, October 9th (holiday) from 1:00 p.m. We will be inviting you to the live commentary and announcer Kazumi Saito.

–How has the team responded so far?
“I had some good results on the track, so I think I’m heading into this Ekiden season in good shape.”
–What are the characteristics and strengths of this year’s team?
“We have an ace player, so I think we are becoming a team that people can watch with confidence.”
――The Izumo Ekiden is said to be a speed relay den because each section is short, but what kind of race plan does Director Hanada have in mind?
“I want Ito (Taishi, 3rd year) to firmly join the battle for the lead in the 1st ward, with the speedy Yamaguchi (Tomonori, 2nd year) and the powerful Ishizuka (Yoshi, 3rd year) to take the lead.First half. I hope to save money in the first three sections and develop the race so that the first and second year students and the three younger students in the second half can take on the challenge with plenty of time.”
–Which section do you think is the key?
“The first three sections I just mentioned. We have also appointed first-year students for the fourth and sixth sections, so this will be their first university relay race, and the key will be whether they can produce the results they have practiced properly. I think”
–How are the senior players doing?
“The summer training camp was over and we had an away trip, so they haven’t adjusted perfectly to this (Izumo Ekiden), but they’ve come in pretty good shape.“They couldn’t read the wind,” they said. However, he is considered the ace on the team, so I hope that he will perform in a way that other universities will recognize him as an ace.”
–This is your first Izumo Ekiden as a coach?
“I didn’t have many opportunities to do so during my time at Jobu University, so I’m really happy to be able to stand on this stage. I’m also excited, so I’d like to work with the players with a fresh mindset.”
–Did you run the Izumo Ekiden when you were a player?
“I’ve run three times. In my first, third and fourth years. In my first year, I won the section prize (in the 3rd ward), in my third year, I won the 2nd place in the section (in the 2nd ward), and in my fourth year, I won the section prize (in the 3rd ward). 2nd place in the area)
–Do you feel nostalgic?
“At that time, the tournament had just started, and it was like a relay race or road relay, and there was a festival element to it.People came to Izumo to have fun, and the reception after it was over was gorgeous. It felt like the real Ekiden season was about to begin.The current players are competing in one of the three major Ekiden races right after summer training camp.I wanted the players to be a little more relaxed about it. “I’m here.”
–I’m sure many fans are looking forward to Waseda’s return to Izumo. Could you tell us about your enthusiasm?
“Since our time in Izumo, there has been a lot of support from Waseda. We’ve received a lot of support through crowdfunding, and everyone is looking forward to it, so we’ll do our best to live up to everyone’s expectations.”
