Cultural Enrichment and Youth Empowerment through Olympic Programs

Two programs in particular have helped deepen cultural horizons and broaden vision among the region’s youth.

1,800 public and private primary and secondary schools took part in an initiative called an “Olympic Day in Schools”. This day included a full program of classroom studies, seminars and lectures given by local personalities. Workshops and exhibits featured Olympic sports not commonly seen in the United States, such as race walking, archery, and handball.

In addition, nearly 500 young people aged 16 to 18, from 152 countries, participated in the Youth Olympic Camp. They were joined by international visitors. Together, these teenagers shared adventure courses, as well as lessons in art and sports. Participants also received tickets to attend Games events and visited the most famous facilities and venues for the Atlanta Games.

Finally, emphasis was also placed on engagement with local communities. As part of the “Dream Team” program, 100 schoolchildren were designated, each year between 1992 and 1996, to embody the Olympic spirit in their region. This symbolic representation involved a series of actions to be carried out, in particular by offering literacy programs.
