The search for a telephone joker in a village in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania got on quite a nerve for quiz master Günther Jauch and his candidate.
In the episode of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” broadcast on RTL on Monday evening. Studio guest Frances from Wismar faced the 125,000 euro question: “Anyone who wants to start training with the federal police needs at least which grades on their last school report?” “A: Politics: 1, Maths: 2”, B: “Maths: 2, Sports: 3”, C: “Sports: 3, German: 4” or D: “German: 4, History: 5”. The candidate wasn’t sure about this unusual question, just wanted to rule out A and D, but then pondered: “You shouldn’t be that bad in German.”
Warehouse logistician Bastian from a village south of Hagenow should now help as a telephone joker. But then the technical problems and confusion started. At first, Jauch only heard short beeps, then beeps and a busy signal. The studio technicians then tried another number. Now an older voice answered the phone: “I’m grandma.” Jauch boldly: “I’m glad that I’m making your acquaintance. Is he near you or isn’t he allowed to answer the phone alone?”
But Bastian wasn’t there. “I think he’s with his mother. But I’ll run upstairs. He lives here with me.” Jauch accompanied the older lady through the house – who now went to the joker’s wife: “Where’s Basti? That’s Mr. Jauch on the phone.” Another disappointment. Grandma: “He’s with his parents. I’ve already heard that he should be involved. They also live in this town. But a bit apart.” Jauch researching: “But you have the number?” The grandmother then announced the number out loud in the studio. Jauch: “Did you get the number in the director’s office? Then give us a call.” Meanwhile, the candidate tried to clarify the living conditions: “He lives with his grandparents, but he went to his parents because the reception is better there.”
Next attempt: The tone of “No connection at this number”. Then a busy signal. Jauch was a bit unnerved: “Now we’ve got it all figured out. Now an answering machine is still missing.” Then his suspicion: “What can be: Now grandma called there.” Dialed again: Only beeps again. “We still have a number, say those up there.” Long dial tone. Then beep. Jauch concludes: “I don’t think he wants to. It won’t work.” Candidate Frances finally reached a friend who was also a telephone joker. But in the end she didn’t want to commit herself and went home with 64,000 euros. Answer C would have been correct: “Sports: 3, German: 4”.
