When is the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners animated series release date?
Six months before the game’s release Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt RED announced the existence of an animated series produced by Netflix in collaboration with the Japanese studios Trigger. We are now in 2022 and the anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is about to land on the famous streaming platform. Announced for September 2022, this “Netflix Original” will be released in September. All 10 episodes will air in full on September 13, 2022.
Cyberpunk : Edgerunners est a Netflix original production. In fact, the animated series jointly supervised by Polish studios CD Projekt RED (Cyberpunk 2077, “The Witcher” trilogy) and Japanese Trigger (Kill la Kill, BNA: Brand New Animal) will be available exclusively on the SVOD service of the American firm struck with the red N. You must or will therefore have to be a subscriber to the streaming platform to take advantage of the 10 episodes of the series. It seems unlikely that a physical edition, whether on Blu-Ray or DVD, will be distributed following the broadcast of the anime during the month of September 2022.
Although set in the universe of the Cyberpunk 2077 video game, the animated series Edgerunners is qualified as standalone by its creators. It is therefore not necessary to have finished, or even played, the title developed by CD Projekt RED to discover and enjoy the anime produced by Netflix. However, the story told over ten episodes explores certain corners of Night City and develops several facets of the lore, starting with the Edgerunners. Note that the term Edgerunners originally comes from a book entitled “Edgerunners Inc” serving as a complement to the Cyberpunk 2020 role-playing game and of which Cyberpunk 2077 is the video game adaptation.
What is the story behind the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners animated series?
The story of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners focuses on the character of David Martinez. This debt-ridden street kid (or streetkid), once a student at the academy of Arasaka Corporation, becomes by force of circumstance an Edgerunner, an outlaw mercenary also known as “Cyberpunk”, after having had a strange cybernetic implant fitted. He is notably accompanied in his adventures by Lucy, a Netrunner wishing to flee Night City and escape to the Moon. It is through this hacker equipped with a cybernetically augmented interface system that our hero discovers the Underworld.
Who are the creatives behind the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners animated series?
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is a project initiated by Rafaj Jaki, former Director of New Business Development for CD Projekt RED, and produced by Netflix. The anime is directed by Japanese animation studios Trigger, which you probably know for BNA: Brand New Animal, Kill la Kill, Promare and of course episodes 3 “The Twins” and 7 “The Elder” of the Star Wars: Visions animated anthology. The realization is entrusted to Hiroyuki Imaishi (Neon Genesis Evangelion, Gurren lagann, Kill la Kill) while the musical compositions are the work ofAkira Yamaoka (Silent Hill, The Medium). Enfin, Franz Ferdinanda Scottish rock band, were commissioned to create the opening credits (or opening song) “This Fffire”.
