Recently, attacks on GPS (Satellite Geolocation System) have become more and more numerous and can directly affect the world of aviation.

An example of the importance of these attacks is, for example, the decision of the company Finnair to suspend flights to Tartu, Estonia for 2 weeks in 2024.

GPS attacks can appear in 2 different ways: GPS Jamming, which consists of a DDoS attack, normally volumetric, with the objective that the tool is no longer usable by aircraft. The second is GPS Spoofing, which consists of sending a new GPS signal which shows a new location of planes/boats. But how important is GPS for the plane?

GPS is used by aircraft in several ways: firstly it is used to determine the location of an aircraft not only during flight but also when parked. This location is of great importance not only for the pilot to know his position in relation to other planes but also for the control center to organize the landings and departures of planes at an airport. A recent example of the importance of GPS occurred in Brazil in a domestic flight whose pilot almost landed at the wrong airport due to a GPS error.

GPS is also used by other aircraft equipment, notably to determine speed and height. A pilot also said in a NASA report that he received a ground proximity alert and because of this alert the pilot aborted the landing with a go-around (a technique used by pilots to make a “go-around”). around”, that is to say, redo the landing).

With the development of new technologies, attacks against GPS are more and more numerous around the world, which can generate several problems for aircraft companies and customer protection. This type of attack, for the moment, has not created enormous damage, however, with the increase in attacks against passenger planes, the risk of having an accident increases.

For the next few years, it seems that airline companies will be forced to work on tools to prevent GPS attacks or resolve them as quickly as possible in order to reduce the risk to people.
