Cycling: Egan Bernal suffers from fractured femur and kneecap after hitting a bus

It was in a rather cautious message that the Ineos Grenadiers team unveiled the traffic accident suffered by Egan Bernal, the winner of the 2019 Tour de France. This Monday, the Colombian rider allegedly hit a bus that was at the arrest in Gachancipa, in the department of Cundinamarca where he resides.

In the images relayed on social networks, the Ineos-Grenadiers runner is lying on the ground, rescued by passers-by, while his teammates do not seem to be overly worried. “We can confirm that Egan Bernal was taken to hospital following a training accident at a team camp in Colombia this morning. We will provide a further update on Egan’s condition in due course,” the UK team wrote on social media.

Cervical, thorax and lower limbs affected

25-year-old Egan Bernal was taken to the La Sabana hospital center, north of Bogota, to take check-ups. Placed in “observation” and “conscious”, his condition however required many treatments. According to the Colombian press and The Team, the winner of the last Giro would suffer from a fractured femur and kneecap. He should be operated on soon.

According to a press release from the La Sabana University Clinic, published on Monday evening, the former winner of the Tour presented “polytrauma” and was to “undergo surgery in the next few hours”. The cervical, thorax and lower limbs were affected, according to the clinic’s press release.

For his first outing of the year, Bernal was expected on the Tour de Provence from February 10 to 13.
