The Chemin des Tumuli is one of the main axes of the Brussels part of the Sonian Forest. It is also one of the most popular with cyclists who like to climb this double hill or descend it, often at very high speed. To curb them and prevent accidents, Bruxelles Environnement, the site manager, has decided to set up cyclist barriers.

Brussels Environment has placed barriers that force cyclists to adapt their speed on the Chemin des Tumuli, in the Sonian Forest, following an increase in complaints and accidents“, explains on its website the administration of the environment in the Brussels region. These barriers installed for a few days will be closed on weekends.

Accidents and complaints

These obstacles are indicated by appropriate signage, taken from the highway code: the ‘attention triangle’“, adds Brussels Environment. “Markings on the ground in the form of white sound strips are also placed upstream of the barriers to invite cyclists to slow down.

The barriers will be installed at the border with Flanders but also at the crossing with the Drève du Comte.

The Chemin des Tumuli is located in the territory of Watermael-Boitsfort. Largely paved, it is more than 1.8 kilometers long with a highest point at 122 meters above sea level. For some bike hikers, speaking about le site Climfinderwhich lists the best climbs in Europe, you have to be very careful when attacking the path.

Beware of walkers (and cyclists coming in the opposite direction) all the same because there are quite a few turns with little visibility“, writes for example one of them. “One of the nicest places to cycle in Brussels… when there aren’t too many walkers with their dogs on a leash, or worse, without a leash, occupying the entire width of the road without worrying about others people. I’ve seen accidents there“, says another.
