A month after the deadly gun attack at a university in Prague, the Czech parliament has approved a draft law for stricter rules on gun ownership. On Friday, MPs voted in favor of a draft that the government had already presented in June last year. It is the first step on the way to stricter regulations; it now has to be confirmed by the Senate and announced by the President.
The new gun law would continue to allow the Czech population in general to buy, own and use weapons. According to this, arms dealers would have to report suspicious purchases, and the police could confiscate weapons if in doubt if it comes into force. In addition, the mental health of gun owners would be more strictly checked.
In December, a 24-year-old student shot 14 people at Charles University in Prague and then killed himself. It was the worst case of its kind in the country’s modern history. According to Czech media reports, the assassin had eight weapons, including a semi-automatic weapon, ammunition and silencers.
At the same time, the Interior Ministry is already planning to supplement the draft law to make it even more strict. It is due to be presented to Parliament later this year.
