Czech RepublicA giraffe dies, the souvenir photo of the zoo does not pass

An animal park in Ostrava shocked several Internet users by posting a photo of one of its lions devouring the carcass of a giraffe, euthanized at 19 years old.

Some Internet users would have preferred to see an image of the giraffe frolicking happily.

Ostrava Zoo lost one of its giraffes last week. In a post published on September 27, the animal park explains that the 19-year-old animal had to be euthanized due to heart failure and poor general health. “Unfortunately a giraffe had to be killed at Ostrava zoo on Sunday. (…) She collapsed in the afternoon, could not get up and was breathing with difficulty”, can we read in particular on Facebook.

To illustrate this sad news, the zoo has made a surprising choice. He has indeed published a snapshot showing a lion devouring the carcass of the giraffe. “The more than 300 kilos of meat served as food for domestic animals and other carnivores, as would occur in nature,” explains the animal park on the social network. This explanation was not enough to convince some Internet users, taken aback, even shocked by the choice of the photo.

‘Not the happiest choice’

“It’s very sad… even though it’s the law of nature, this shot is inappropriate,” said one user. “I don’t think this choice of photo is the happiest. Maybe a cool image of the same giraffe frolicking happily in the zoo?” someone else suggested. “When we announce the death of a person, we use a nice photo of them still alive, not with worms coming out of their eyes… Because that’s also nature, isn’t it?” quipped one user.

The zoo did not comment on its choice of photo but explained that it still had two young giraffes in the park, a male and a female. “Reproduction will certainly continue and expand,” he rejoices.
