The corresponding proposal was received from the Ministry of Education of the Czech Republic and was supported by the leadership of the National Sports Agency. Also, the government of the country forbade its athletes to compete in Russia.

This ban effectively excludes the possibility of the Russian team participating in the 2024 Ice Hockey World Championship, which will be held in Prague and Ostrava.

The Czech Republic is not the first country to impose sanctions against Russian athletes. In mid-June, the Polish authorities refused to issue visas to Russian fencers. The head of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach, condemned the decision of the Polish authorities, calling them discriminatory.

In March 2023, the IOC recommended that international federations allow athletes from Russia and Belarus to participate in international competitions in a neutral status. At the same time, the IOC has not yet made a final decision on the participation of Russian athletes in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
