[D:현장] Lee Jung-ok and Kim Dae-geon’s ‘Paroho’, a well-made psychological thriller filled with doubt and anxiety

Actor Lee Jung-ok and rookie Kim Dae-geon will go to the theater in the summer with the gloomy psychological thriller ‘Paroho’.

On the afternoon of the 9th, a press preview and press conference for the movie ‘Paroho’ was held at CGV I’Park Mall in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, with director Im Sang-soo, Lee Jung-ok, Kim Dae-geon, Kang Mal-geum, and Kim Yeon-kyo in attendance.

‘Paroho’ is a psychological thriller about the daily life and ripples of three people related to the main character Do-woo (Lee Jung-ok) after the disappearance of his old mother.

Director Im Sang-soo said, “I was in my late 30’s when I wrote this screenplay four years ago, and it’s been about 10 years since I started making films. I wanted to write an honest expression of emotions. So I went to Taebaek and found a shabby motel. At that time, the lady boss looked very lonely. With that image, ‘Paroho’ began,” he revealed the background of directing the movie.

Director Im Sang-soo said, “At first, I finished it as a short film and wanted to expand it into a full-length film. In the process, the character Do-woo was a person who couldn’t express his desires, so I was reminded of a dam. So I found a lake. Usually, the name of the dam is given a place name, but Lake Paro is The tone was beautiful. I thought that the bodies piled up in the Paro were like the abyss of Dou.”

Lee Jung-ok, who plays Do-woo, who lives while caring for an elderly mother with dementia, said, “The story has twists and turns and is cruel. work,” he said.

Director Im Sang-soo said, “I was worried at first because Lee Joong-ok played a lot of villains. I thought that the timid feeling in the beginning had to be set in order to get Do-woo’s explosive energy in the middle and late part. It was decisive for Jade to feel like he was accumulating energy inside rather than discharging energy outside.”

Lee Jung-ok said, “There was a reversal in the mid-to-late movie, so I tried not to get caught. Also, I thought about what it would be like to be outside of Do-woo’s movie. That was an important issue for me.” I wanted to show Do-woo’s emotional change when he met the villagers,” he said while acting.

Kang Mal-geum plays Hye-soo, who runs a small beauty salon in Hwacheon by herself and takes care of her husband who is suffering from Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Kang Mal-geum said, “I saw Im Sang-soo’s movie at the Jeonju International Film Festival in 2018. At that time, I said hello and said that I would like to work with him next time. After a while, I received the script for ‘Paroho’, and there was an atmosphere of a movie I liked. I got the impression that the director didn’t write a single word in vain, so I participated with the belief that good results would come out.”

Kang Mal-geum said, “I met Seong-hyeon Seong-hyeon, who plays my husband’s role, before being cranked in for a photo shoot. Since then, I’ve lost 10kg when we met on set. I thought that that actor was doing what I was supposed to do. I respected him as an actor. I want to say it,” he said.

Kim Dae-geon played the unidentified character Ho Seung. Kim Dae-geon said, “Ho-seung is not attached to the ground, so that point was difficult. I was thinking a lot about what validity Ho-seung’s actions and words should have. While talking with the director, if Do-woo is being oppressed as if he is chained to it, he can release it. It seemed to me that it should be approached as a spiritual being.”

Director Im Sang-soo added, “The concept of the movie was to lay the motel’s gloomy atmosphere on the floor in a dark atmosphere and then continue to ask the question whether Ho Seung is a real person or a fictional person.”

Regarding working with Lee Jung-ok, Kim Dae-geon said, “He treated me so comfortably. I had a big thought that I had to play in the field, but when people are nervous, I withdraw.

Kim Yeon-kyo, who plays Mi-ri, also expressed her gratitude to Lee Jung-ok. Kim Yeon-kyo said, “For me, the role in advance was a challenge. You may remember, but during the filming, I said, ‘Yeon-gyo, it was good to be back now.’ Those words have always given me strength. I will upload it,” he said, saying he relied on Lee Joong-ok.

Kang Mal-geum said, “I don’t think most movies these days want to see the main character with a warm heart. But I see this movie coldly. As I watch the movie, the confrontation structure and questions keep changing in my mind. It was a good experience that a movie could give,” he said, expressing confidence in ‘Paroho’.

Director Im Sang-soo said, “If Ho-seung is a non-existent person, Do-woo becomes the assailant, and if it is a real person, Do-woo becomes a gaslighting victim. He said, “This is my first movie, so it may be lacking, but I made it with all my heart. There are many good movies in the theater, but please pay attention to ‘Paroho’ as well.” Opening on the 18th.
