Daewoo Shipbuilding’s labor union urges subcontractor unions to stop occupying docks

[e대한경제=노태영 기자] Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering’s labor union has urged the strike subcontractor’s union to stop occupying the dock by the 12th.

The Daewoo Shipbuilding branch of the Metal Workers’ Union issued a statement on the 11th, saying, “The scale of damage caused by the prolonged struggle of the subcontractor branch has increased like a snowball, reaching a level that cannot be easily recovered, and it has reached a point of threatening the right to survival of the members of the Daewoo Shipbuilding Association. We have made a decision to prevent it,” he said.

“The struggle to prevent the launch of Dock 1 will be a struggle that will not receive the support of all members of DSME,” he said.

In response, he warned, “I understand 100 times the position of the Confederation of Trade Unions and the Metal Workers’ Union to revive the subcontracting branch, but we will not tolerate the decision if the company becomes unrecoverable and the Daewoo Shipbuilding Division is divided.”

About 120 union members of the Chosun subcontracting branch of the Metal Workers’ Union have been on strike since the 2nd of last month, demanding a 30% increase in wages, collective bargaining, and recognition of full-time union members. From the 22nd of last month, the super-large crude oil carrier being produced at Dock 1 was occupied and entered the steel structure and blocked the entrance with welding.
