Readings for today Wednesday.

Isaiah 7:10-14: “Behold, the virgin will be pregnant.”

The Lord spoke to Ahaz: Ask the Lord your God for a sign; may it be deep as the abyss, or high as the sky! But Ahaz answered, “I will not ask! I will not tempt the Lord.” Then Isaiah said, Listen, house of David! Is it not enough for you to tire men, do you also have to tire my God? Therefore the Lord himself will give you this sign: the virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and she will name him Emmanuel. God’s word.

Today’s psalm.

Psalm 24(23): Let the Lord enter; he is the king of glory.

The earth and its fullness belong to the Lord, the world and those who inhabit it. For he founded it on the seas and established it on the rivers. /R.

Who can go up to the mountain of the Lord? Or who can be in his holy place? He whose hands are free from sin, whose heart is clean, who does not desire what is vain. /R.

You will receive a blessing from the Lord, a reward from God, your savior. Such is the race that seeks him that seeks the face of the God of Jacob. /R.

Today’s Gospel.

Luke 1:26-38: “Do not be afraid, Mary: you will conceive and give birth to a son.”

In the sixth month, the Angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city in Galilee, called Nazareth, to a virgin who was betrothed to a man belonging to the family of David, named Joseph. The virgin’s name was Mary. The Angel entered her house and greeted her, saying: “Rejoice! Full of grace, the Lord is with you.” Hearing these words, she was taken aback and wondered what this greeting could mean. But the Angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will call him Jesus; he will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him “The throne of his father David will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” Mary said to the Angel: “How can that be, if I do not have relations with any man?” The Angel answered him: “The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child will be Holy and will be called the Son of God. Your relative Elizabeth also conceived a son despite her old age, and “She who was considered barren is already in her sixth month, because nothing is impossible for God.” Mary then said: “I am the slave of the Lord, may what you have said be fulfilled in me.” And the Angel walked away. Lord’s word.

Reflection Pope Francis.

Today’s Gospel presents us with the scene of the Annunciation (cf. Lk 1, 26-38)… The Angel says to Mary: “Rejoice, full of grace: the Lord is with you” (cf. v. 28). And the evangelist Luke points out that the Virgin “was greatly troubled… and tried to discern what kind of greeting this could be” (v. 29). She is surprised, shocked, disturbed: she is amazed to hear herself called “full of grace”, the Virgin is humble, that is, full of the love of God. It is a very noble attitude: to be amazed at the gifts of the Lord, to never take them for granted, to appreciate their value, to rejoice in the trust and tenderness that they bring… (Homily of Pope Francis on today’s Gospel)

Phrase from the Pope.

We must not fear crises of life and faith: crises revive our need for God and thus allow us to return to the Lord, to experience his love again. (Pope Francis, May 9, 2022)

Intentions of the day.

In today’s Gospel, Wednesday, according to Saint Luke 1:26-38, we can read: “Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your plea has been heard. Elizabeth, your wife, will give you a son whom you will call John.” The daily Word presents us with the extraordinary Annunciation of the Angel to the Virgin Mary. The angel’s greeting reveals the divine grace that surrounds her, while Mary’s response reflects a total surrender to the will of God.

This passage from today’s Gospel invites us to reflect on how we respond to the unexpected calls in our lives and to imitate Mary’s humility and faith in saying “let it be done to me according to your word.” The story of the Annunciation reminds us that, through trusting obedience, we can participate in God’s redemptive plans in the world.
