Damage assessment and recovery work 2024-03-24 21:09:35

In the early hours of Saturday, a tornado of great force shook the Paso Real de San Diego popular council, in the municipality of Los Palacios, Pinar del Río, leaving behind a trail of destruction and commotion in this western province of Cuba.

Although the phenomenon did not claim lives or cause injuries, the images spread on social networks reveal the magnitude of the devastation and the fear it generated among residents.

Among the most affected targets are the photovoltaic park, a key piece in the region’s renewable energy system, and the chosen V-8, vital infrastructure for the local tobacco industry.

The tearing winds of the tornado had no mercy on the trees and electricity cables, leaving them scattered everywhere, while hail hit the territory, as confirmed by the authorities of the provincial Meteorological Center.

The first evaluations indicate the magnitude of the damage: five farm houses, eighteen homes and thirty-two panels in the electrical substation are among the main victims.

The images transmitted by the Municipal Assembly of People’s Power of Los Palacios show the seriousness of the situation, with houses partially or completely destroyed, and streets turned into a labyrinth of rubble.

Recovery work is already underway, with local authorities canvassing affected areas and coordinating efforts to restore basic services. Despite the persistent rains, rescue and repair teams work tirelessly, prioritizing the safety and well-being of citizens.

The capricious nature has also affected other regions of Cuba, with reports of significant accumulated rainfall in several locations, including the aforementioned Los Palacios, where 184 millimeters of rain were recorded in the municipal aqueduct.
