Daneil Schmidt: Leaving St-Truiden for a New Challenge with La Gantoise

St-Truiden announced on Thursday that it was taking leave of its goalkeeper Daniel Schmidt, who expressed the wish to take on another challenge. The Japanese defended the Canaries’ goals for four seasons. He does not leave Belgium and immediately signed a contract until 2027 with La Gantoise. Among the Buffalos, the Japanese must make people forget the long absence of Paul Nardi.

Daniel Schmidt, 31, had become a pillar at Stayen since his arrival in the summer of 2019. He will have played 114 matches, returning a ‘clean sheet’ on 35 occasions, the Trudonnaire club listed in its press release.

“During his stay at Stayen, Daniel Schmidt not only demonstrated that he is a good goalkeeper, but he also demonstrated exemplary dedication and great tenacity. He was therefore not just a player, but also a member of the STVV family”, declared the sports director of St-Truiden André Pinto paying tribute to him.

Daniel Schmidt was in his last year of contract and had asked at the start of the season to take on a new challenge. An announced move to FC Metz was aborted in September. STVV then recruited his compatriot Zion Suzuki, 21 years old. “Given his service record, and as he only has a few months of contract left”, St-Trond has agreed to leave him free for a future transfer, ending his contract with immediate effect.

“These four seasons in St. Truiden are an important period of my life. Together we have overcome many challenges and I have been able to gain experience for my personal progress,” also thanked Daniel Schmidt.
