Danger in WhatsApp: application becomes the target of malware that steals data from conversations

WhatsApp is one of the most used applications in Brazil and now it has become the target of malware called CoverIm, which steals data from messages with text, audio, images and even videos from users.

According to the security company CYFIRMA, the malware is distributed through the SafeChat application, which promises to make user conversations safer, but does just the opposite.

Propagation is carried out by WhatsApp itself, through which SafeChat is sent to users via links to malicious sites that induce its installation on the device. When opened, SafeChat asks for several permissions, which will allow CoverIm to take over the smartphone and conversations stored in applications such as WhatsApp, Telegram and Signal.

CoverIm is currently targeting accounts in South Asia, but any phone that has SafeChat installed can have information stolen.

CYFIRMA still cannot say the origin of the campaign involving the malware, but the main recommendation is never to install applications from unknown sources, as the infection is almost impossible to detect.

If you suspect that your cell phone has been infected with malware, the ideal is to uninstall the application, install antivirus software to eliminate the infection, change all your passwords and, as a last resort, format the device.

In order not to be infected, the ideal is always to be suspicious of suspicious links received via WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Telegram or any other application, even if it was sent by someone you know. Keeping your phone’s operating system and apps up to date is also a great way to have the latest malware protection.
