Dangote Oil Refinery Receives Million Barrels of Crude: Transforming Nigeria’s Fuel Industry

The new $19 billion Dangote oil refinery has received 1 million barrels of oil from Shell International Trading and Shipping, its second cargo of crude this month, as it accelerates its preparations for begin operations, a company spokesperson said Wednesday.

The refinery is years behind schedule, but its operations are expected to transform Africa’s largest oil producer into a net exporter of fuels, a long-sought goal for the OPEC member that relies almost entirely on imports.

A Dangote spokesman declined to specify where the crude was coming from, but said the cargo would be unloaded at the refinery outside Lagos on Wednesday.

Dangote said she expected other cargoes to be delivered by national oil company NNPC Ltd this month, as well as a cargo from ExxonMobil.

OPEC’s oil quota for next year is 1.5 million barrels per day (bpd), but the government says it plans to produce 1.8 million bpd to ensure supply. Dangote factory and state refineries which are being modernized.
