Daniel Ricciardo has revealed how his early-season simulator sessions at Red Bull Racing have rekindled the fire inside him. Ricciardo is out of racing this year after a difficult two years at McLaren. As Red Bull’s third driver, he is involved in the team’s marketing duties while supporting Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez.
It’s a role I’ve taken on to stay connected and involved in F1 and see if I’m ready to take the next step or if I still have the thirst for competition. While still in the process of making that decision, Ricciardo admits he is leaning towards a return to F1. That was after his first appearance in the race in his new role at the Australian Grand Prix earlier this month. Until then, Ricciardo had been spending time in the Red Bull simulator at Milton Keynes. The simulator was just like a “revelation”. “The first simulator day at Red Bull this year was honestly the most enjoyable simulator session I’ve ever had,” said Ricciardo. “I haven’t been driving for almost three months, so everything was fresh and exciting. Of course, there’s the fact that I’m back in an environment with many memories.” “I felt it in the room. Simon, who was an engineer, was doing a session with me and in a way it kind of made me laugh. It was a really good day.” “Sim feels like it’s a job, it’s a job. Especially as a racing car driver.I put in my work and when I’m done I go home.” “But when I was doing the session, someone said, ‘Once you’ve done enough laps, you can finish.’ I remember.” We were like, “No, another lap.” Cross the line and do a little better, ‘One more lap! “So he kept joking about how hard it was to drag me out.” I didn’t care anymore. The real fun was to compete.” “So I was able to enjoy the simulator, so I’m glad I took a break from the competition for a while.” , better than I expected.” The session helped me regain the confidence I had lost at McLaren. And it was also a manifestation of the feeling that I want to go to the race again.
