danish bastard

TODAY’S CINEMA

After 25 years in the German army, Captain Ludvig Kahlen (Mads Mikelsen) returns to his native Denmark, with the dream of becoming a noble landowner.

For this purpose, he claims a desolate wasteland that the king has designated for those who work it. But unfortunately for him, the land is also coveted by the tyrannical nobleman Frederik De Schinkel (Simon Bennebjerg), who wants to marry his cousin Edel Elene (Kristine Kujath Thorp) who despises him for being tyrannical and a womanizer.

That is the driving force behind The Bastard by Nikolaj Arcel, based on a historical novel by Ida Jenssen, which has just premiered at the National Cinematheque and on commercial billboards.

The film is a class confrontation between a poor man, surely the bastard of a great lord, and an alcoholic and cruel aristocrat, from whom couples like Ann Barbara (Amanda Collin) and Anton (Gustav Lindh), who is narbarically, flee. burned alive by Frederick.

The director of A Real Affair achieves a splendid historical recreation with beautiful photography by Rasmus Videbaeck and splendid performances to which we must add Melina Hagberg as the little Animal Mus.

Bastarden is therefore a highly recommended film that shows that noble titles are not necessary to be happy.
