HANNOVER, N.H. (AP) — The Dartmouth men’s basketball team voted Tuesday to unionize, an unprecedented step in American college sports and another devastating blow to the NCAA’s amateur business model. .

In an election overseen by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) at the school’s human resources offices, players voted 13-2 to join Section 560 of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), which already represents to some Dartmouth workers.

Each player in the team voted.

“Today is a big day for our team,” said Dartmouth freshmen Cade Haskins and Romeo Myrthil, who have spearheaded this effort. “We stayed together all season and won this election. Clearly, as students, we can be both campus workers and union members. Dartmouth seems stuck in the past. It is time for the era of amateurism to come to an end.”

The school immediately appealed to the full NLRB, seeking to overturn a decision last month by a regional board official that Dartmouth students are employees with the right to unionize.

Both sides have until March 12 to file an objection with the NLRB over the election procedures. Unless otherwise provided in those resources, the SEIU will be certified as the workers’ representative in the negotiations.

The case could even end up in federal court, which could delay negotiations on a collective bargaining agreement until long after the current members of the basketball team have graduated.

Dartmouth had warned students that unionizing could lead to expulsion from the Ivy League team or even the NCAA. In a statement, the school said it supported the five unions it negotiates with on campus, including SEIU Section 560.

However, he insisted that the players are students, not employees.
