David Reinbacher: From the Montreal Canadiens to Europe – Insights from Coach Gerry Fleming | The Sick Podcast with Tony Marinaro

The Montreal Canadiens have made the decision to draft David Reinbacher. He subsequently made the decision to have him play in Europe this season, far from the spotlight of Montreal and Laval.

Both decisions were contested.

For my part, I loved the first decision, but I would have liked to see him play in Laval (with William Trudeau, for example), in terms of playing on small ice and playing according to the CH system.

But OK. The more we hear about Kloten, the more we understand that the caliber of play there is high.

We also understand that the club is in good hands with Quebecer Gerry Fleming who is at the helm of the club. And yesterday, he was on Tony Marinaro’s Sick Podcast to chat a little about his career, but also about his protégé.

In the episode, we hear the coach (who was notably inspired by Jacques Demers to become a pilot) praising the style of play of Reinbacher, who should eat up minutes on the ice in 2023-2024.

That’s the important thing.

His shooting, his reading of the game and being a highly valued teammate are all aspects that ensure Reinbacher is developing in the right way to become an NHL player.

He will have to become bigger and more explosive, but being in Europe, with a less demanding schedule than that of the NHL and AHL, could help him at this level.

The CH also has a program to help it get there.

But when it came time to compare him to an NHL player, Fleming surprised many people by naming Jeff Petry, a former player he already coached while in the AHL.

Oh yes?

After all, maybe both have a good shot and offensive instincts to find the puck and anticipate where it will go, but defensively, we agree that Petry was never the best.

Reinbacher is possibly already better than Petry has ever been in his zone.

Petry has been an important defender for the Canadian and if Reinbacher has his qualities without having his faults, let’s say that Jeff Gorton and Kent Hughes will be able to rub their hands together. And this, even if Matvei Mi– ah worse let it happen.
