This Tuesday, October 10, another earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 shook western Afghanistan, a country that just three days ago was shaken by another earthquake of the same magnitude.

The tremor occurred in the same area where more than 2,000 people died on October 7 after a similar earthquake. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the shallow tremor was recorded with an epicenter 29 kilometers north of the city of Herat.

Initially, no new victims were reported from Wednesday’s earthquake near Harat, a city of more than half a million inhabitants. However, new reports indicate that at least 50 people were injured.
“About 50 people were injured in today’s earthquake in different parts of the city” of Herat, a doctor from the Herat Regional Hospital, who preferred not to reveal his name, told EFE on board one of the emergency ambulances that travel the city to care for the victims.

Meanwhile, volunteers and rescuers have been working since Saturday to search for survivors of the previous series of earthquakes, which destroyed entire towns and affected more than 12,000 people, according to the UN.

Earthquakes are frequent in Afghanistan, but this latest one was the deadliest to hit the Central Asian country in more than 25 years.
According to figures from humanitarian organizations and the government, more than 12,000 affected people and 20 villages were completely destroyed by the 6.3 magnitude earthquake and the subsequent aftershocks, leaving more than 2,400 dead and more than 2,000 injured.

An estimated 12,110 people, including 1,730 families, were affected by the earthquake in five districts of Herat province, where the tremors occurred, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported in a statement on Tuesday. .
In the worst affected district, Zindah Jan, the epicenter of the earthquakes, OCHA estimated that 1,350 families suffered total losses, followed by 150 in Injil, 95 in Gulran, 60 in Khosan and 30 in Robat-e-Sangai, all located in the province of Herat.
In Zindah Jan, 100 percent of the houses were completely destroyed and 485 people are still wanted, 294 of them women, OCHA added.
